We kicked off the chilly winter morning by warming our bodies around the campfire and cooking up a hearty camper’s breakfast of bacon and eggs before heading out to hike a few of the 13 miles of trails weaving through the park. The cooler months are ideal for fall foliage hikes along trails such as the short but steep half-mile climb leading to White Rock Cave — a delight for both big and small explorers. The sun cast its warmth over Garner State Park by noontime and we found solace paddle boating down the Frio while marveling at the turtles, fish and a few brave campers splashing in the brisk, translucent water. The kids spent the afternoon casting fishing poles into the sparkling river and playing a round of miniature golf before returning to the campsite, where we rekindled the fire for a camp-worthy meal of hot dogs and s’mores. When the weather heats up, Garner-goers enjoy tubing and swimming in the Frio, taking scenic hayrides and boot-scooting under the stars at the park’s nightly summer jukebox dances.<br />

<b>Eat here:</b> Bring along your cooler and Coleman stove to picnic in nature - visitors can refuel by purchasing firewood and propane within the park. Open daily during the summer and operating certain weekends throughout the year, Garner Grill satisfies big appetites with burgers, corn dogs and fries and serves up sweet treats such as ice cream cones and frozen Lightning Lemonade.<br />

<b>Stay here:</b> Pay the daily entrance fee ($7 adult day use/$5 nightly; free for children 12 and under), and you can stay overnight in Garner State Park at a variety of camping areas. Choose from campsites ($15-$26 nightly), shelters ($25-$35 nightly), cabins ($130 nightly) or a group campsite with bunk beds and screened shelters ($350 nightly).<br />

This particular Type 2 landed in the UK as a “rust-free, ex California” example, and was without an engine. While the van was sold as “rust-free”, it was decided that it would need extensive bodywork restoration.<br /><br />The interior was refurbished to the owner’s specification, and includes features such as a custom sound system with speakers below the seats, a DVD player and a head unit with internet connection.<br /><br />Electrical power is supplied by two batteries housed beneath the bed, while there is also a 240-volt mains connection and split charging system.<br /><br />Although orginal T1 vans made use of the same rear-mounted 1.2-litre engine from the VW Beetle, this particular camper is powered by an uprated 2,030cc engine, which is mated to a specially-made Freeway Flyer gearbox manufactured by Bears Motorsport of Dudley.<br /><br />While the Type 2 might sell for roughly the same price as a V8 Jaguar F-Type R, don’t expect similar levels of performance, as the engine only produces 100bhp.<br /><br />The restoration took four and a half years to complete, and the VW camper van has been on the road since 2013. In that time, it has covered just 1,800 miles.<br /><br />The iconic vehicle will go under the hammer at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on June 30.</div>

RV shipments were up 15 percent year-over-year in 2016, hitting their highest level in 40 years, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. The biggest sales increase is coming from the smallest motorhomes. Shipments of camper vans – standard vans like Ford Transit outfitted with sleeping and living areas – are up more than 36 percent through March. Class C motorhomes – camper van built on cutaway chassis including the Ford E-Series consisting of vehicle frame, suspension, powertrain and cab – are also rolling out at a rapid pace, with shipments up more than 32 percent through March, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.<br />

Ford leads the motorhome chassis market in Classes A, B and C, holding 63.8 percent share in 2016, up from 61.2 percent in 2015, according to data from Statistical Surveys Inc., a market analysis company specializing in the RV, marine and manufactured housing industries. In 2016, Ford’s share of the Class C market with Transit and E-Series cutaways was 69 percent, up from 65 percent in 2015, while its share of the Class A market, led by the F-53 chassis, was 67.6 percent, up from 66 percent. RV manufacturers just started building Class B motorhomes on Transit last year.<br />

“We’re seeing tremendous growth in Ford Transit and E-Series sales to the RV market,” says Dennis Bearden, Ford RV and pool account manager. “Last year, our Class C motorhome sales were up 28 percent, and as more motorhome manufacturers build on Transit, our Class B sales are also climbing. Like most camper van built on them, Ford Transit, E-Series and F-53 chassis are assembled in the United States for the North American market. For 2017, Ford updated its E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis to offer the 6.2-liter V8 engine proven in F-Series Super Duty trucks. This optional engine provides 356 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm and 331 horsepower – representing a significant improvement over the 5.4-liter engine it replaced.
